Review

Rolling Stone (8/19/93, p.76) - 3 1/2 Stars - Very Good - "...Urge have never lacked for ideas, but on SATURATION they cut away the fat....a world where melody and melodrama get their due..."

Spin (7/93, p.16) - "...Abandoning the suave, laid-back airiness of last year's EP for a more frenzied sonic guitar blast, this rockin' major debut is an ultraworthy addition to the fine UO catalog..."
Village Voice (3/1/94, p.5) - Ranked #16 in the Village Voice's 1993 Pazz & Jop Critics Poll.
Q (9/93, p.92) - 3 Stars - Good - "...SATURATION represents a darker, heavier, more bluesy version of the pop noise of Nirvana...here is yet another American band set to take on the world and come out smiling..."
Melody Maker (6/19/93, p.33) - "...Urge Overkill are so perfectly placed, with the clobber and the melodies, that it's easy to imagine them hitting Stateside MTV with the same force that Suede hit the music press in Britain....Melodic, sassy, supercool, SATURATION is a triumph for American rock..."
NME (6/26/93, p.38) - "...[SATURATION is] a pristine, hard rockin', unashamedly romantic all-American dream ticket..."
NME (12/25/93, p.67) - Ranked #40 in New Musical Express' list of `The Top 50 LPs Of 1993' - "...a wonderful, near-faultless homage to the mid-'70s American rock of Boston, Cheap Trick and Grand Funk. Quite exquisite...."
Entertainment Weekly (7/23/93, p.60) - "...This band paid attention in How To Be A Rock Star 101. Melody, guitar riffs, and feedback are good...add your own thing, but keep it subtle, as with clever song titles--`Bottle Of Fur' and `Heaven 90210,' for example..." - Rating: B+

SATURATION is the major label debut of the Chicago-based Urge Overkill. There is a 20-minute silence following track 12 that concludes with an unlisted song.
Chicago rockers Urge Overkill hit upon a winning formula with SATURATION.
They add slick production values and a more streamlined, accessible sound to an already high energy, crunch-guitar-heavy profile. Moreover, their adoration of '70s hard rock on the order of Kiss, Aerosmith, and Cheap Trick squeaks, creaks, and reeks all over this album like an old pair of leather pants. Interlocking dual-guitar riffs, anthemic choruses, backing "ooh"s and "aah"s, and arena-appropriate solos all conjure the warm, familiar specter of headbanging days of yore.
The group's pop sensibility saves it from mere cliche, however, as evidenced by the smooth, catchy hooks on "Bottle of Fur" and the album's crank-up-the-volume-worthy opener, "Sister Havana." With its mix of nostalgia-tinged classic rock elements ("Positive Bleeding" is definitely worthy of air guitar and a raised fist) and clever melodicism, SATURATION is one of the best albums of its kind.
