Title Note

On SANCTUARY, Magna Canta blends sleek electronica loops with ecclesiastical chant. Given such titles as "Kyrie" and "Pater Noster," it's clear that Magna Canta is making direct reference to the music of the early Christian liturgy.

Each track on SANCTUARY combines old-world mysticism with ultra-modern sounds. For example, "In Excelsis Deo" uses shimmering keyboards and throbbing percussion together with Gregorian plainsong. Another selection, "Sanctum Christe" employs the same kind of musical juxtaposition. However, on this piece, a piano countermelody allows for chordal movement, thus blurring the lines between the ancient world of monophony and today's harmonic complexities. Other tracks such as "Close to Heaven" and "Celestia Organa" complete this musical picture, as digital sounds become entwined with powerful Gregorian singing. On the latter, the pulsating quarter notes even give this track a modern "club" vibe. Overall, SANCTUARY is unique in its ability to span the centuries. Elements of trip-hop, chillout, and New Age all commingle with the haunting sounds of the medieval mass. The music that results is nothing short of angelic.
