Review

Entertainment Weekly (9/18/98, p.88) - "...If these dozen untrained singers...sometimes fall short of the hushed mystery you'd hope to hear in these motets and airs, they bring a freshness and lack of pretension that coax the beautiful, craggily austere music out of the cloisters and into the clubs." - Rating: B

Product note

Mediaeval Babes: Ruth Galloway (vocals, treble recorder, drum); Katherine Blake (vocals, recorder); Rachel Van Asch (vocals, drums); Nichole Sleet (vocals, tambourine); Audrey Evans (vocals, sticks); Nicole Froblisch, Carmen Schneider, Karen Lupton, Teresa Casella, Marie Findley, Clare Ravel, Cylindra Sapphire (vocals).
Additional personnel: Dorothy Carter (dulcimer, hurdy gurdy).
If the name doesn't clue you in, the plunging necklines should: Mediaeval Babes are the virgin-vamps of early classical music, their angelic chants perfectly offset by pouty, come-hither stares (not to mention the topless photos of members that sprinkle the liner notes). The Babes are the brainchild of Katharine Blake of Miranda Sex Garden, who, along with 11 other female singers and musicians, helped establish a contemporary approach to medieval music.
Interestingly, on their debut album SALVA NOS, the end result is more traditional than you'd expect. The songs draw from traditional sources from the 12th through the 15th centuries, and only rarely include instrumentation, unlike later albums such as UNDENTRIDE and THE ROSE.
