Terry Allen--artist, sculptor, singer and songwriter--is one of Austin's (and America's) formerly best kept musical secrets. "Formerly" because his last album, HUMAN REMAINS, had some heavyweights friends backing him up, like Lucinda Williams and ex-Talking Heads David Byrne. His gravely voice is best described as a cross between Robbie Robertson, Randy Newman, Townes Van Zandt and Tom Waits. His songwriting, too, begs comparison with these figures. Wry, sardonic, tart, irreverent, satirical--Allen's songs are like short stories, with "Twilight Zone"/"South Park"-like twists to them.

"The Doll" is about the way Jesus Christ and religion is "used" and/or ignored by modern society. Musically, he draws on country, folk, Cajun, blues and African music. If Kurt Weil had grown up in Texas listening to Bob Dylan and the Band's BASEMENT TAPES, he might sound like Terry Allen. If you like your songwriters astute and cynical (like Elvis Costello to Richard Thompson), get SALIVATION.
