Review

Mojo (Publisher) (p.125) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Sounding like a feral Tempations...it's mystifying why the group's rough-hewn yet soulful harmonies failed to find an appreciative audience."

Title Note

Shades Of Brown: William Brown, Charles Scott (tenor); Earl Roberts (baritone); Arthur Williams (bass voice).

Arrangers: Richard Evans; James Johnson; John Stevenson; Charles Stepney.

A stirring slice of early `70s Chicago sweet soul that harks even further back to the Impressions and the Dells, S.O.B. has long been a favorite of soul fanatics and beat heads but can now be enjoyed by a wider audience, thanks to the ever vigilant folks over at Dusty Groove, who assembled this winning reissue. The lead single, "The Soil I Tilled For You," features a booming breakbeat that has been sampled repeatedly over the years, but this album, which features arrangements by Richard Evans and the legendary Charles Stepney, is remarkably consistent as a whole, and is indeed one of the finest psychedelic soul LPs of the early `70s.
