Deerhoof Artist Snapshot:

Deerhoof is a San Francisco-based post-rock outfit that balances charming whimsicality (thanks mainly to bassist Satomi Matsuzaki's childlike warbling) with unpredictable rhythms, scratchy guitars, and bits of sonic and melodic weirdness. The overall sound is inventive, spontaneous, and sometimes oddly poignant. Greg Saunier and Rob Fisk formed Deerhoof in San Francisco in 1994, but things didn't take flight until bassist Matsuzaki joined the group; through many lineup changes, she has been the keystone. Still an indie phenomenon, the band's most acclaimed release so far has been 2007's FRIEND OPPORTUNITY.

Review

Entertainment Weekly (No. 849, p.72) - "...[L]ike some gravity-free amalgam of Sonic Youth, Stereo Total, and a POWERPUFF marathon...." - Grade: B
The Wire (p.58) - "[H]ighly sprung pop melodies, muddled song structures and interesting metaphorical lyrics....The results here are in some ways more powerful than anything they've recorded before."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.100) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[T]he true themes here are magic and exploration, which befits a band bent on finding places the rest of us don't yet know."

Title Note

The follow-up to 2004's acclaimed MILK MAN finds Deerhoof traversing slightly more accessible territory than on its past outings. Given the San Francisco-based noise-pop band's penchant for fractured, fragmented chaos, however, THE RUNNERS FOUR is still a challenging and strangely fascinating album. Jarring prog-rock mixes with sunny melodies (courtesy of helium-voiced singer/bassist Satomi Matsuzaki), and the group follows a winding, jagged path that could seemingly veer down almost any stylistic byway in an instant. Highly eclectic and inventive, this record stands as one of 2005's most adventurous indie-rock releases.
