One of the intriguing things about Norway's downbeat electronica duo Royksopp is their restless stylistic experimentation. While their full-length debut, MELODY A.M, favored moody atmospherics and surging basslines, its follow-up, THE UNDERSTANDING, leaned toward '80s-flavored Euro-pop. The live EP ROYKSOPP's NIGHT OUT changes the band's template yet again.

With more muscle than either of the group's two studio releases, this EP maintains the layers and textures the band is known for, but adds an energy that points to more straightforward club music. The version of "Poor Leno," for example, adds a thudding backbeat, while "Go Away" improves upon the studio original with its new-found live pulse. As usual, Royksopp like to keep their listeners guessing (their cover of a Queens of the Stone Age song is a case in point), which is one of the things that make this live set a worthy listen.
