Title Note

Pianist Roy Budd is most known for his work as a film composer, particularly for Get Carter. But prior to that he'd issued several albums in the mid- to late-'60s as a modern jazz pianist. Blue Budd collects 16 tracks that he recorded for the Pye label from around 1967 to 1970, and while these don't exactly make one think he made the wrong decision to go into film work, they do testify to his skills and versatility as a straight jazz player. Heavily influenced by Oscar Peterson, Budd has a busy, energetic style that, while verging on the show-offish at times, is particularly impressive on the pieces that demand fast playing, complete with occasional grandly decorous flourishes and runs. Tony Hatch, most known for producing Petula Clark and writing her huge hit "Downtown" (as well as the pop hit "Call Me," which Budd covers here), produced most of these tracks. That might be part of the reason that some of them have string, horn, and wind arrangements suggestive of the loungey '60s highlife -- something that might put off jazz purists, but also helps give those cuts some period charm, as well as perhaps foreshadowing Budd's later involvement in movie scores. Budd also ably handles some bossa nova material at times, though on a few numbers he plays in a conventional straight-ahead boppish/cool fashion. Incidentally, unlike most of the perfunctorily annotated anthologies on the El label, this one has liner notes that actually specifically discuss the tracks on this compilation -- a welcome improvement over the usual standards the company applies to its packaging. ~ Richie Unterberger
