This entry in the rewarding Rough Guide series spans Malaysia's wide cultural and racial range, from the commercial sounds of the wonderfully named Fredo and the Flybaits, whose "Nasi Gadis" combines Indian and Western pop instincts, to the more traditional "Ghazal Masri" of Mari Menari. Muzik Tarian Malaysia's "Johore Sports Club" underpins its violin and accordion melody with a hypnotic East Asian rhythm, while Arabic influences are apparent on Yusoh, Kumpulan Ahmad, and Rakan-Rakan's polyrhythmic "Burung Burung Ayam."
