The three-disc, 45-track THE ROOTS REMAIN is a scrupulously remastered and nicely packaged tribute to one of the great Southern rockers of the '70s, Charlie Daniels. In chronological order, these three discs cover Daniels' entire career from his first single, "Then, Now and Until the End," through the smoking bluegrass-rock of his early days--dig the Allmans-style 12-minute jam "No Place To Go"--through the slick country-pop of his most commercially successful era. "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" is included, as is the country and gospel material of his '80s and '90s albums.

The song selection is impeccable, it sounds great, and rarities like a countrified version of "Layla" make it attractive even to fans that have most of his albums. This is an excellent example of how to do a box set.
