On ROCKPAPERSCISSORS, his first non-soundtrack solo studio outing since 1992's COBALT BLUE, renowned Canadian guitarist/producer Michael Brook weaves together a dreamy tapestry from various world-music threads by featuring an international cast of performers, including choral and orchestral ensembles from Bulgaria, where much of the album was recorded. Always at the fore, however, is Brook's signature "infinite guitar" playing, which blends melody and ambience, as on the delicate "Want" (featuring Lisa Germano) and the mesmerizing title track, which presents a vocal turn by Paul Buchanan of the Blue Nile. Most significantly, the serene "Pond" incorporates the voice of the late Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, a former Brook collaborator, giving the record a strong link to the guitarist's earlier work.
