Desmond Dekker was the first Jamaican artist to have an international pop hit: The song "Isrealites" (1969) was a top-10 hit in England, America, Canada, West Germany, Holland and South Africa.

Long before it found its way overseas to the United Kingdom and the United States, reggae music was Jamaica's popular music. Influenced by indigenous beats and American R&B absorbed through the radio, reggae artists fashioned a unique dance music that was irresistibly tuneful and lyrically substantial. One of the genre's earliest stars was Desmond Dekker, whose "007" and "Israelites" defined the rock-steady beat of the era. With ROCKIN' STEADY, Rhino Records has compiled 20 of Dekker's best recordings and biggest hits.

ROCKIN' STEADY evidences Dekker's pioneering work in socially conscious songwriting; clearly, Dekker laid the foundation upon which Bob Marley would build his musical empire. Such songs as "007," "Keep a Cool Head," and "A It Mek" warn against the inevitable downfalls of a life of crime and violence, while "Israelites," and "Unity" speak to the growing sense of national pride among Jamaican youth of the day. Because it gathers all of Dekker's big hits in one tidy package, fans of early reggae should find this collection indispensable. Those outside that group, however, are just as likely to succumb to its bouncy beats and soaring vocals.
