Title Note

Producer: Ken Nelson.

Compilation producer: Ron Furmanek.

Recorded in Nashville, Tennessee. Includes liner noted by Steve Kolanjian.

Digitally remastered by Larry Walsh (1989, Capitol Studios, New York, New York).

Little is known about Esquerita, the musical and visual oddball who was one of the most mysterious figures of '50s rock & roll. Memorably described in Gene Sculatti's THE CATALOG OF COOL as looking like "a '59 Continental with a tumbleweed process and rhinestone shades," the former Eskew Reeder (even that much information is disputed) recorded a couple of dozen sides for Capitol Records from 1955 to 1957. All of them flopped, and with only a couple of later sightings confirmed, Esquerita disappeared.

These Capitol recordings, collected in full on this 28-track anthology including alternate takes and unreleased sides, are so memorably strange that Esquerita's legend will likely never die. Shrieks, chants, moans and jungle-beat R&B mingle in these tunes, as if Esquerita was the mutant love child of Little Richard and Screamin' Jay Hawkins.
