Title Note

One of the more pleasant side effects of the Twin Peaks mania that gripped the media world in 1991 is that Julee Cruise's gorgeous 1989 album Floating Into the Night (written and produced by David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti) got rather a lot of belated attention after the bleach-blonde pixie appeared in several episodes as the singer in the roadhouse. Warner Brothers finally threw some promotion behind the record, including the release of this CD EP, which features two remixes of one of Floating Into the Night's best songs. Unfortunately, the mixes -- the "Tibetan Single Mix" and the longer "Tibetan 12" Mix" -- are a total botch, smothering the ethereal beauty of the original song in a dully repetitive drum'n'bass groove. And for some bizarre reason, Cruise's vocals are sped up to match the accelerated pace of the new instrumental bed, making the already wispy-voiced soprano sound like the fourth Chipmunk. These are a textbook example of how not to do a remix. (And don't be misled, world music fans: There's nothing even remotely "Tibetan" about these.) As if in penance, the disc then offers the original album version of the lovely "The World Spins" and the rare original single edit of "Rockin' Back Inside My Heart" from its original, impossible to find 1989 single release. ~ Stewart Mason
