Publisher's note

Best known as founder, songwriter, lead singer, and guitarist for Little Feat, Lowell George's creative vision drove the critically acclaimed band. Before ôdyin' young from hard livin,'ö George became a master of soulful slide guitar and a respected session player and producer, working with Linda Ronstadt, the Grateful Dead, and other performers. From his 1960s stint as a sideman in Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention to his solo career, just taking off when he died in 1979, this book tells George's story. The author explores the influence of George's music within the context of his colorful life, and analyzes in detail the techniques behind key songs and recordings. With photographs and based on interviews with fellow musicians, producers, label executives, friends, and family, Rock and Roll Doctor explores the musical legacy of one of the most eclectic musician-producers of the 1970s.

Annotation

One of the seminal bands of the early 1970s, Little Feat's first three albums, LITTLE FEAT, DIXIE CHICKEN, and SAILING SHOES, are often cited as among the most influential works of any California band of the era. ROCK AND ROLL DOCTOR, Mark Brend's well-researched biography of the band's founder, guitarist, and main songwriter, Lowell George, follows his career from its garage band beginnings (later Little Feat drummer Richie Hayward and George's songwriting partner, Martin Kibbee, aka Fred Martin, were fellow band members) through Little Feat's formation and beyond. A talented and influential slide guitar player, George also composed songs of both remarkable tenderness and rock-&-roll abandon. His songwriting skills dominated Little Feat's early recordings, but his increasing alcohol and drug abuse resulted in his estrangement from the band. Though his musical career continued throughout the '70s, his connections with the group he'd formed grew increasingly tenuous. His death in 1979 from a heart attack may have been caused by a variety of factors, from his weight to his cocaine use, but, as Brend relates in his well-researched and informative book, it robbed rock & roll of a unique and outstanding talent.
