Title Note

Each volume of Excelsior's Rock On series provides an extremely arbitrary snapshot of the year that's being covered. Only 12 songs are on each disc, meaning that a good amount of space goes to waste, and there's little in the way of stylistic focus. Needless to say, these hastily patched-together budget-line discs shouldn't be considered suitable documentations for the years they are covering. Rock On: 1978 includes Nick Gilder's "Hot Child in the City," Michael Johnson's "Bluer Than Blue," Dr. Hook's "Sharing the Night Together," Natalie Cole's "Our Love," A Taste of Honey's "Boogie Oogie Oogie," and Bob Welch's "Ebony Eyes." ~ Andy Kellman

The ninth volume in Madacy's year-by-year overview of the biggest hits of the '70s and '80s, Rock On 1978 captures a pivotal moment in music history. By 1978, disco had been completely assimilated into the mainstream thanks to massive hits like Frankie Valli's chart-topping "Grease" and the Trammps' "Disco Inferno," new wave was still in its infancy but spawning records like the Cars' "Just What I Needed," and the era of country-pop was beginning with Number One pop hits like Exile's "Kiss You All Over." ~ Chuck Donkers
