Algerian-born Rachid Taha's collection of eclectic dance tracks and covers pay homage to his Arabic roots while dipping into progressive rock, tropical bass lines, reggae beats, and electric guitars. If one hadn't heard his music before, songs such as "Ya Rayah" would deceivingly give the impression that this is just another artist recycling popular Middle Eastern beats. But with his forceful voice and enigmatic approach to music, it's only fitting that Taha would also cover a punk classic like the Clash's "Rock the Casbah" (a version featured in the film about Clash frontman Joe Strummer). Of course, he's no novelty covers artist either. On ROCK EL CASBAH: THE BEST OF RACHID TAHA one gets a perfect sampling of Taha's music career, which spans over 20 years, taking the listener on a cross-cultural and genre-bending journey.
