Before Barrington Levy conquered the dancehall in the late '80s with an inimitable string of hits (including the herb-smoking anthem "Under Mi Sensi"), he ruled the proto dancehall "rub-a-style" on his early albums for the U.K. imprint Greensleeves. ROBIN HOOD, originally released in 1980, is a masterful set of late-period roots-reggae from the production/backing group powerhouse of Henry "Junjo" Lawes and Roots Radics. Featuring Levy's distinctive yodel-like vocalizations alongside deep, melodic bass grooves, the album sets the tone for the next decade of dancehall deejays, from melodic sing-jays to gruff-voiced ragamuffin stylists.
