Review

"Zuckoff's approach works, not just because the form he has chosen mimics so elegantly the boisterous cacophony of a really good Altman movie, but because he lets the contradictions, reconsiderations and regrets play across his pages with no agenda other than to clarify and illuminate the up-and-down-and-up career of a brilliant, erratic film artist."

"ROBERT ALTMAN: THE ORAL BIOGRAPHY is a book that dispels fog....Mr. Zuckoff...wound up interviewing 200 Altman collaborators, as well as exhuming the voices of journalistic critics and camp followers. He has spun all this material into a big, comprehensive, flesh-and-blood account of Altman's persona and exploits, though not a serious look at his body of work....[But i]f this book presumed to know all about Altman, it wouldn't know him at all."

"Mitchell Zuckoff's contribution to Altmania...is invaluable, ingenious and formally unique....[His book] is an oral history that's sprawling, cacophonous, contradictory, loopy, laugh-out-loud funny and...all over the map. In other words, he's turned Altman's life into something that resembles an Altman film."

"Zuckoff's portrait is multifaceted and fully realized, giving the reader a clear view into Altman's firebrand persona. An engrossing, comprehensive book that gives invaluable insight into the life and work of a truly original artist."

"In this fitting tribute..., Zuckoff chronicles Altman's remarkable life both in and out of the spotlight.....A rebel to the end, Altman's spirit is perfectly captured in this fascinating read." (starred review)

Publisher's note

Robert Altman--visionary director, risk-taking producer; eccentric family man, Hollywood icon--comes brilliantly to life in this rollicking oral biography.
Altman burst onto the scene as a major film director in 1970 with "M*A*S*H." His groundbreaking style helped usher in a new era of American filmmaking, and his most famous films--"Nashville, Short Cuts, "and "The Player," among them--manipulated genre and form in ways that had never been done before nor replicated since.
Here, in a chorus of voices that can only be called Altmanesque, the director's life and career are recounted by those who knew him best: his sisters, wives, children, and old girlfriends; agents, producers, writers, fellow directors, and studio executives. We hear from Meryl Streep, Warren Beatty, Tim Robbins, Julianne Moore, Paul Newman, Julie Christie, Elliott Gould, Robin Williams, and many others. We even hear from Altman himself.
Mitchell Zuckoff, who was working with Altman on his memoirs before he died, weaves the interviews together into a seamless, riveting tale of an extraordinary life. From revelations about the director's womanizing and his brief career as a dog tattoo entrepreneur to the heart transplant he tried to keep secret and his notorious tempestuous nature, here is Robert Altman as we've never seen him.

Draws on the perspectives of close family members, colleagues, and actors to assess the iconic director's life and artistic achievements, providing coverage of such topics as his womanizing reputation, his heart transplant, and the creations of such films as M*A*S*H and The Player. By the Pulitzer Prize-finalist author of Ponzi's Scheme.

Annotation

Hollywood is a fickle place to make a living, but fewer film directors have inspired such a rhythmic alternation between applause and acrimony as Robert Altman. When Altman died in 2006, he was in the midst of working on his memoirs with Mitchell Zuckoff. In the spirit of the obdurate director, Zuckoff refused to be deterred by his subject's death and eventually compiled ROBERT ALTMAN: THE ORAL BIOGRAPHY, which features interviews with more than 200 friends and collaborators of Altman, as well as contemporary reviews and analysis of his films. Zuckoff's cacophonous chorus of voices--some praising, some scathing, always entertaining--reflects the complexity of Altman's career and the diffuse brilliance of his best work.
