Gene Clark Artist Snapshot:

A key member of the classic original line-up of the Byrds, Gene Clark helped invent folk-rock in the mid '60s and wrote several of their classic songs, including "Feel a Whole Lot Better" and "Eight Miles High." After his 1967 departure, Clark recorded masterpieces with Doug Dillard and the Gosdin Brothers that pioneered the fusion of country and rock. He perfected this highly poetic, layered country-rock as a solo artist on 1971's underappreciated WHITE LIGHT and 1974's baroque NO OTHER. He later collaborated again with his former Byrds bandmates in McGuinn, Hillman & Clark, and with singer Carla Olson in 1987. He died in 1991 due to alcoholism.

Q (6/91) - 3 Stars - Good - "...these melancholy, reflective tunes have a charming fragility and escape the cloying self-regard and heavy-handed production of LA singer-songwriters they prefigure."

Product note

Personnel: Gene Clark (vocals, acoustic guitar); Rick Roberts (acoustic guitar); Clarence White, Bernie Leadon, David Crosby, Roger McGuinn (electric guitar); "Sneeky" Pete Kleinow (pedal steel guitar); Byron Berline (fiddle); Bud Shank (flute); Spooner Oldham (keyboards); Chris Hillman (bass); Michael Clarke (drums).
Recorded between May 12, 1970 and June 13, 1972. Includes liner notes by Barry Ballard.
Although Roadmaster has the feel of a completed album, it is actually a collection of top-quality out-takes. It was originally released only in Europe, where Clark's previous album, White Light, had been a moderate success. It appeared seven years after Clark left the Byrds and has a laid-back, Sunday morning feel that was echoed in the Eagles' early work. However, beneath the languid rhythms are several songs that rank with Clark's best compositions. One track, 'Full Circle Song', was later performed by the Byrds on their reunion album, while two others, 'She's The Kind Of Girl' and the lovely 'One In A Hundred', are Byrds reunions.

ROADMASTER appeared seven years after Clark left the Byrds and has a laid-back, Sunday morning feel, characterized by Clark's chiming country rock.

Two songs here, "She's The Kind Of Girl" and the lovely "One In A Hundred," feature performances by the original Byrds, while another track, "Full Circle Song," was later included on the Byrds' reunion album. These tunes stand alongside the Byrds' best songs, which is reason enough to explore this excellent, unjustly overlooked album.
