Review

"Rose Tremain's version of the 'ant-heap,' seething with temptations of fame and money, reeking with pretentious xenophobia, is very convincing indeed....[She] seems to share that indomitable English faith that better times are just around the corner behind you..."

"At once timeless and bitingly contemporary, this novel explores the life now lived by millions--when one's hope lies in one country and one's heart in another."

Rose Tremain "has writen about a dozen novels..Each book has an entirely distinct voice, tone and subject, but all have equal vigor, fluency, and authenticity of characterization."

Publisher's note

Making his way to London through Eastern Europe in the wake of factory closings and his wife's death, Lev finds a job in a posh restaurant and a room in the home of an Irishman who has also lost his family, a situation that is colored by his affair with a younger co-worker and his phone conversations with a friend back home.

Annotation

After his wife’s death and the closing of the saw mill where he works, middle-aged Olev leaves Eastern European existence behind, along with his daughter, his mother, and his hilarious friend Rudi. His idealized picture of London life is quickly shattered: he is forced to live with an alcoholic Irishman and work for a tyrannical restaurant chef--pervasive xenophobia marks the British attitude toward immigrants like Lev. Despite the harshness of his émigré circumstances, Lev finds solace in a tender affair with a co-worker and in his nostalgia for the East. Ultimately, he must weigh his choices and decide whether he prefers London to home.
