Celso Fonseca plays understated, romantic, acoustic bossa nova in the vein of Joao Gilberto, and his sophomore release, RIVE GAUCHE RIO, builds on the fine songwriting and subtle, jazzy textures of his debut. Amid Fonseca's own bossa novas and sambas are some fine covers (Damien Rice's "Delicate," for example), and there are contemporary flourishes--such as the faint traces of electronics--that make this update of the classic Brazilian genre a winner.
