Sunny Day Real Estate Artist Snapshot:

Sunny Day Real Estate began as part of Seattle's grunge explosion in the mid-1990s. Their debut on the iconic Sub Pop label found them mixing heavy rock with a distinct '70s influence. Though they didn't initially change the world … la Nirvana, they subsequently became the prime influence on the emo scene. After a split that found singer Jeremy Enigk releasing an acclaimed solo album, the band reconvened and released new material with a more mature, varied sound. Following their tour for their fourth album, THE RISING TIDE, SDRE called its quits again, only to reemerge as the Fire Theft in 2003.

Review

Rolling Stone (8/3/00, p.58) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Emo-core's answer to earnest, pre-ACHTUNG BABY U2....above all, it's the other-worldly sound of [Jeremy] Enigk's voice...that immerses the listener..."
Magnet (8-9/00, p.94) - "...Simultaneously dark, textural, riff-based and clichT-free, yet filled with the sort of sweeping gestures and lofty arrangements you usually find in vintage prog."
CMJ (7/00, p.62) - "...The direct production and the band's musicianship are faultless, with drummer William Goldsmith sounding particularly strong....There's no doubting their skill and sincerity..."

Title Note

Sunny Day Real Estate: Jeremy Enigk (vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards, bass); Dan Hoerner (guitar, lap steel); William Goldsmith (drums).

Additional personnel: Larry Packer, Stan Kurtis, Rachel Handman, Michelle Stewart (violin); Ryan Hall, Emily Schaad (viola); Lisa Bressler, Rob Turner (cello); Lou Giordano (programming).

Recorded at Dreamland Recording Studios, West Hurley, New York.

On its fourth album, THE RISING TIDE, Sunny Day Real Estate severely shifts the established style that had brought it accolades and emulation from dozens of mid-'90s soundalikes. The band's earlier, more somber, emo approach here gives way to flashy flurries of furious extroverted melodies with echoes of '70s progressive rock. The result is a surprise; an overwhelming, rapturous album that both experiments and digs into rock history for inspiration, turning rock cliches into new finds.

Drummer William Goldsmith, always impressive, ascends to an indie-rock echelon reserved for the likes of Zach Barocas (Jawbox, Up On In) with his visionary flourishes, particularly on tracks such as "Killed By an Angel" and the title track. Jeremy Enigk's unique high-pitched vocals are welcome as ever, whether expressing subtle beauty as in "Tearing in My Heart," or wailing over the album's most retro-'70s track, "Television." What sets THE RISING TIDE apart from earlier Sunny Day Real Estate efforts lies in the band's newfound sense of adventure, endearing in a combo whose direction had hitherto seemed set.
