Irish ex-pats Tom, Paddy, and Liam Clancy are the quintessential folk musicians of Irish America. After relocating from Cork to New York City in the 1950s, the trio began perfecting their mix of traditional, drinking, and rebel songs, finding themselves at the forefront of the NYC folk revival. Their enormous repertoire, rousing performances, and Aran sweaters were lapped up by both folkies hungry for authenticity (Bob Dylan chief among them) and expats lonesome for the "Old Sod." The group became wildly popular nationwide, and soon brought their legendary show to Carnegie Hall. With a set of songs that tackled serious Irish social issues with both sensitivity and raucous humor, they became heroes to the vast Irish diaspora in the United States. Tommy Makem went solo in 1969, but the trio continued to make music until his and Paddy's death in the '90s.

There is a plethora of songs in Irish folk music reflecting the country's struggle for independence. On THE RISING OF THE MOON, the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem focus on the rich and extensive canon of tunes that come from hundreds of years of rebellion. Most of the songs heard here hark back to material written in the late 18th century.

The title track goes back to stories of the 1798 rising, in which pikes and guns were hidden in thatch and bogs in anticipation of a revolution that ultimately failed. Other patriotic songs include "Kevin Barry," a popular song that recounts the 1921 hanging of a student rebel whose execution resulted in a greatly increased voluntary recruitment into the Irish Republican Army. A stirring album, THE RISING OF THE MOON is one of the Clancy Brothers' most resonant efforts.
