According to REVELATION'S liner notes, this is an album created for the tormented and oppressed. The back cover reads, "for the martyrs of the dagger of submission, the unseen brings a new life every morning." Not surprisingly, like most of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's work, REVELATION celebrates God, love, and spiritual awakening in a world of strife.
REVELATION depicts the qawwal, a style of religious music that has its origins in the Sufi poets and musicians of ancient Islam. All four tracks on REVELATION are hypnotic and marked by the sharp percussive effects of tabla drumming and hand clapping. In addition, the use of the sarangi and harmonium (traditional Pakistani and Indian instruments) brings greater depth and range to Nusrat's devotional chants, as does a chorus of singers, who echo his praises to Muhammad, and add great passion to each composition. Highlights include "Rabba Lakh Lakh Shukar Manaawa" and "Tere Hundiva Sundiya Mehbooba."
