The Durutti Column Artist Snapshot:

One of the earliest and most enduring creative acts springing from the Manchester-based Factory Records scene, the Durutti Column started out in the late 1970s as an actual band, and quickly evolved into a more nebulous arrangement of guitarist Vini Reilly and a host of collaborators. Reilly's haunting, innovative guitar pieces are multi-tracked, and sometimes mesh with guest vocals, string instruments, samples, and loops. His ambient approach has always stood apart from the trends of the day, and his discography--with a pause between the years 1990-95--is astonishingly consistent in quality. Though Factory Records folded in '92, Reilly's later output has been released through a series of independent labels.

Title Note

Re-released debut from the post punk Mancunian guitarist. 1996, U.K. import.

The second full-length release by the revered Manchester label Factory Records (the first being Joy Division's UNKNOWN PLEASURES), THE RETURN OF THE DURUTTI COLUMN is, in fact, the debut album by the post-punk act, essentially a solo vehicle for guitarist Vini Reilly. Aided considerably by visionary producer Martin Hannett, Reilly uses RETURN as a platform for his chiming instrumental pieces, tracks that fully showcase his dexterous, and often delicate, electric guitar playing. Highlights of this mesmerizing record include the gauzy, chirping "Sketch for Summer" and its darker counterpart, "Sketch for Winter," as well as "Conduct," which grounds the floating atmosphere with a bit of rock percussion. For anyone interested in the Durutti Column, THE RETURN OF. is indispensable.
