Darol Anger's dedication to American roots music has never been stronger than on REPUBLIC OF STRINGS. He doesn't offer staid interpretations of classic bluegrass tunes on this album, but rather a varied collection of pieces culled from a mixed bag of styles. This release certainly draws on bluegrass, but it is also heavily influenced by Celtic music, regional (Appalachian) country, Reinhardt-Grappelli style jazz, and even reggae and pop.

One of the highpoints on REPUBLIC OF STRINGS is the traditional Irish piece "Grigsby's Hornpipe." This is a mystical tune that centers itself on an ominous drone. The jazzy "Sneezin'" is also a standout track. Here, the American Fiddle Ensemble's taut unison bebop lines are topped only by Anger's own burning-hot violin solo. In a completely different vein, interpretations of the UB40 tune "Higher Ground" and the Joni Mitchell ballad "Help Me" show the depth and breadth of Anger's musical conception. Both songs maintain the integrity of the original versions, yet the dense string arrangements add great sophistication to the proceedings. In fact, Anger's smart orchestrations urge listeners to think about these songs not so much as radio hits, but as profound works of art.
