Title Note

Jamaican dancehall singer Cocoa Tea emerged among the first wave of dancehall artists in the 1980s, and continued to cut excellent records well into the 2000s. THE SWEET SOUND OF COCOA TEA is a two-disc set that collects Cocoa Tea's best material from across the decades. Naturally, the nature of the dancehall sound itself changes, from the early-`80s roots-influenced sound to the harder beats of the `90s to the ragamuffin stance of the 2000s. Through it all, however, Cocoa Tea's smooth, mellifluous voice, which works well in both lover's rock and protest song mode, rings through.
