Title Note

Composer Max Reger has been saddled with the reputation of being a pedantic, dry composer. Reger was a fine teacher who held respected posts at a number of German universities, and a virtuoso organist who toured Europe and Russia. Perhaps his reputation was born of his opposition to program music and his adherence to the concept of "absolute music."

This recording offers up a kinder, gentler Reger, a composer whose Brahms-like gift for melody is married to exhaustive theoretical knowledge. The String Quartet, Op. 109, is a lyrical work that's dotted with moments of fiery passion, eventually tempered by the cool logic of Reger's counterpoint. The Vogler Quartet has this music in its blood: no other ensemble could handle the pyrotechnics of the work's jumpy second movement and sing so eloquently in the third movement Larghetto. Clarinetist Karl Leister joins the quartet for the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, Op. 146. Shades of Mozart's Clarinet Quintet hover about Reger's quintet, especially in the work's first movement. The interplay between Leister and the quartet is impressive, and his creamy tonal quality makes this a very appealing performance.
