Annotation

In 1939, a ship carrying more than 900 Jews from Nazi Germany was refused permission to land in Cuba, and then also refused permission to land in the United States. The St. Louis sailed back across the Atlantic, where 288 of its passengers made it to England, while others were dispersed to France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The fate of these passengers remained unknown until a 1996 research project was initiated by staff of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.

REFUGE DENIED tells the stories of the refugees from the St. Louis and the search to find out what happened to them. Through painstaking research in official documents, memorial books, obituaries, and lists, as well as through public appeals in the media and the help of many organizations and institutions, the museum staff were able to recover a great amount of information about many of the St. Louis passengers, some of whom were still alive, and many others who had perished in concentration camps. Their amazing work continues, and the publication of REFUGE DENIED will bring this shameful story to a wide audience.
