Review

Vibe (9/95, p.171) - "...it is easy to see--or, more directly, to hear--that After 7 could take a nursery rhyme and sing the hell out of it....After the delicious REFLECTIONS, you might want to reflect on this: After 7 could be the pop soul vocal trio of the `90s."

Title Note

After 7: Kevon Edmonds, Melvin Edmonds (vocals); Keith Mitchell (background vocals).

Additional personnel includes: Babyface (vocals, keyboards, programming); Keith Andes (rap vocals, various instruments); Tommy Oliver (conductor); Everette Harp (saxophone); Jon B. (keyboards, programming, background vocals); Tony Boom (keyboards, programming, background vocals); Reggie Hamilton (bass); Chuck Boom (programming, background vocals); Randy Walker (programming).

Producers: Babyface, Jon B., The Boom Brothers, Keith Andes.

Engineers include: Brad Gilderman, Thom Russo, Marty Ogden.

The Whispers. The Temptations. The Stylistics. The Dells. For countless fans of popular music, these names--and a choice few others through the years--are the definition of romantic soul. And if you know what "The Quiet Storm" is, and what it means to lie back on a cold winter night with a warm friend (or a bittersweet memory), while the radio sounds low and sweet, like waves of aural honey...well, suffice it to say, you're in the right place.

Welcome to the world of After 7, where the grooves are smooth and the harmonies are heavenly. And if there is anyone on the planet who knows how to make that ultimate "slow groove" a reality, it is Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds. The fact that his brothers, Kevon and Melvin--and their friend and collaborator Keith Mitchell--have as much raw soul talent as anyone recording today is the icing on REFLECTIONS, an enticingly flavorful R&B cake.

The production is flawless, with wide, orchestral keyboard swells carrying both Edmonds and Mitchell through the ballads ("Till You Do Me Right," "Cryin' For It"), and studio wizard Reggie Hamilton's snap-crackle-pop bass lines propelling the band through up-tempo (but not too up) groove thangs like "Save It Up." Listen to Melvin Edmonds soar through "Damn Thing Called Love." The voice is strong, pure and above all REAL. After 7 serves it up with urgency, lushness, a trace of vulnerability ("How Do You Tell The One"), and an uncanny feel for what the public wants in a make-out record.
