Review

CMJ (3/15/04, p.18) - "[I]f there's one thing you can't deny about Soil, it's that the band knows how to write a song that burns itself into your brain. REDEFINE lives to rock and rocks to live."

Title Note

Soil: Ryan McCombs (vocals); Adam Zadel (guitar, background vocals); Shaun Glass (guitar); Tim King (bass); Tom Schofield (drums).

Recorded at Groovemaster, Chicago, Illinois and Sound City Studios, Van Nuys, California.

On its sophomore major-label album, the Chicago band Soil takes its amalgam of grunge and nu-metal to the next level. REDEFINE finds the group exhibiting a new-found confidence in their execution of material, as on the coruscating, hopeful title track, with its nuanced vocal delivery, and the irresistible guitar onslaught of "Suffering."

Ryan McCombs's corrosive vocals contain hints of emotional depths still unplumbed, while the twin guitar backdrop of Adam Zadel and Shaun Glass remains suitably monolithic (their shared favorite band is Metallica, of course) and the rhythm section stays single-mindedly devoted to the hard groove. Working its way through the nu-metal playbook, from the opening guitar slabs of "Pride" to the powerful, anthemic finale of "Obsession," Soil remains true to its original vision while keeping its collective eye on the future.
