Born Ruffians Artist Snapshot:

Formed in the small town of Midland, Ontario, the indie rock trio known as Born Ruffians (made up of guitarist singer Luke LaLonde, bassist Mitch Derosier, and drummer Steve Hamelin) relocated to Toronto in 2004. A string of well-received live performances and strong online buzz led to the band's signing with British-based label Warp Records. Their self-titled 2006 EP garnered local attention and radioplay with the single "This Sentence Will Ruin/Save Your Life." After touring North America and the U.K. the band recorded their debut full-length with producer Rusty Santos. Released in September 2008, RED, YELLOW AND BLUE balances jangly guitar-driven euphoria with minimalist neo-folk dirges.

Review

Q (Magazine) (p.98) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Like Vampire Weekend, they walk the line between art rock and indie pop."
Clash (magazine) (p.113) - "A tricky combination of stiff rhythms and cascading, epic melodies, tastemaker favorite and single 'Hummingbird' is symmetrical and intricately catchy."

Title Note

Two years after their self-titled EP, the Toronto-based indie rock trio known as Born Ruffians presents 11 quirky tracks on their full-length debut, RED, YELLOW AND BLUE. On the title song, frontman Luke LaLonde lays lofty vocals over a serenely minimalist track (built on guitar plucks and background whistling), crooning about founding his own nation and pontificating on the colors of said nation's flag. From there, the band moves from jangly guitar-driven euphoria ("Barnacle Goose" and "Hummingbird") to starry-eyed neo-folk ("Little Garcon") and drumless dirges ("Red Elephant").

Album Review

Produced by Rusty Santos, the New York mixer behind Animal Collective and Panda Bear's albums, this record exemplifies the Ruffians' brand of self-described 'hootin and hollarin'. From start to finish it's a good time, and the band knows it. With songs like the jangly "Hedonistic Me" and the sugary sweet "Foxes Mate for Life" to the foot stomping "Badonkadonkey", the band constantly pushes the boundaries of musical arrangements. Live, they have the chops of a seasoned performer, but none of the jade, performing each set like it's their last.

this album is an excellent record given to us by born ruffians. To me it is vampire weekend mixed with feels era animal collective. This provided a savior from musical boredom because of lack of good new music. they released it at the time where it was in between good periods of music and it was perfect timing. i definatley reccomend this album!
