Review

Spin (p.106) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "They brawl like Johnny Cash's cellmates or dreamily swoon like Nick Drake, stomping saloon floorboards in 4/4 time as grand strings fade into high noon."
Alternative Press (p.158) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[F]rontman Adam Turla's ominous vocals have amazingly dropped down even further on the octave scale."
Kerrang (Magazine) (p.48) - "[L]oaded with sawdust-floored grit that gives it an edge....A genuinely ace slice of Americana bliss."
Clash (magazine) (p.111) - "It's a record full of MBD's trademark, epic stories....Almost anthemic, MBD are a branding iron to the soul; chroniclers of America's timeless underbelly."

Title Note

Murder By Death: Adam Turla (vocals); Sarah Balliet (cello); Matt Armstrong (bass guitar); Dagan Thogerson (percussion).

Continuing their marriage of punk grit with almost Cult-like swagger (see: "Fuego!"), elements of jaunty rockabilly (see: opener "Comin' Home"), and morbid, Misfits-worthy lyrical content, Murder By Death's bid for big-label success is a knockout. RED is by turns mysterious, mischievous, seductive, and steamrolling; it's unafraid to explore disparate moods without abandoning its core sonic template of dirty guitars, Morrison-meets-Danzig vocals, rollicking percussion, and sullen strings. It's an LP that subsists on neither novelty, gimmick, nor genre convention. Rather, it rolls around the edges of each, making for a listen that demands attention and is danged entertaining.
