Review

Option (7-8/96, p.102) - "...This is American music in its purest essence, neither black nor white, but coarse, free-spirited and dangerous...I haven't figured out which side of the fence Dex is on; I doubt he's crazy, though I do think he's possessed. That may be...why I keep coming back for more."

Title Note

Flat Duo Jets: Dexter Romweber (vocals, guitar, piano, organ); Crow (drums).

Additional personnel: Simon Chardiet (guitar); Cindy Brolsma (cello); Johnny Cecka (acoustic bass).

Recorded at Coyote Studios, Brooklyn, New York on September 5-7, 1995.

Continuing the association with Norton Records' Billy Miller and Miriam Linna that began with 1993's rarities retrospective SAFARI and 1995's stunning INTRODUCING THE FLAT DUO JETS, North Carolina guitarist/singer Dex Romweber and his stalwart drummer Crow threw a change-up on their sixth album, RED TANGO. Romweber may be the first man to merit the overused "rockabilly wildman" sobriquet since his obvious hero, Hasil Adkins.

While the rave-ups still have the manic intensity of such earlier albums as 1991's crazed GO GO HARLEM BABY-"Sea Of Flames" is one of the most out-of-control things the duo have ever done-RED TANGO displays an increased sense of dynamics. Romweber and Crow had shown a talent for tender rockabilly ballads before, but there are more slow songs than ever to be found here. The highlight is "I Wish I Was 18 Again," previously a maudlin country ballad (popularized by comedian George Burns) that, in Romweber's hands, becomes a Big Star-like slice of wistful pop.
