Plastikman: Richie Hawtin.
Recorded at UTK, Windsor, Canada.
This six-track EP, released the same year as 1994's MUZIK, is less subtle--though no less artfully executed--than its predecessor. Plastikman, aka Richie Hawtin, is known for his modification of techno's beat-based vocabulary with ambient shadings and abstract textures. RECYCLED PLASTIK is anchored by heavier rhythm tracks than MUZIK, with thudding bass drum propelling standout cuts like "Krakpot" and "Electrostatik." The phased, wavering tones Hawtin unleashes over these beats oscillate through the listener's brain like the blades of a giant, hallucinatory fan. Such hypnotic, head-nodding fare is contrasted by the abstract synth call-and-response of "Gak Remix" and the ticking, stuttering beats of "Spastik." RECYCLED PLASTIK is another fine addition to the discography of one of electronica's quiet luminaries.
