Review

Magnet (p.86) - "Capacious, intimate and brimming with both whimsy and tension, RECORDING A TAPE is what classical music might sound like from some advanced alien civilization."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.101) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[I]diosyncratic but curiously beautiful....They layer upright bass, violins, brass, percussion and discreet electronics into unpredictable but absorbing collages."

Title Note

Bell Orchestre: Sarah Neufeld (various instruments, violin); Kaveh Nabatian (various instruments, melodica, trumpet, bells); Pietro Amato (various instruments, French horn); Richard Reed Parry (various instruments, organ, Farfisa, synthesizer, glockenspiel, upright bass, bells, tapes); Stef Schneider (various instruments, xylophone, drums, cymbals, bells).

Recording information: 2003.

An instrumental outfit featuring members of Canadian indie rockers the Arcade Fire, Bell Orchestre creates music by turns jazzy, folky, ethereal, and percussively angular. Strings converse with drums, while marimbas fashion circular patterns against subtle washes of electronica. The mood is occasionally hushed, as on "Les Lumieres Pt. 1," with its beautifully mannered horns, percussion, and strings, and sometimes raucous, as in the exuberant "Throw It on a Fire," but Bell Orchestre's layered, subtle musical vision never fails to captivate.
