RECONSIDER ME collects Johnny Adams' late-'60s work for the Nashville-based SSS label. Though he was recording with players theoretically more comfortable with country music, this is peak Adams and as good as Southern soul gets.

High points include a terrific remake of "I Won't Cry," Adams' first hit, where his trademark falsetto soars stratospherically. The title song neatly splits the difference between soul and country. "Real Live Hurtin' Man" is a gospel-inflected gem. On the ominously bluesy "I Can't Be All Bad," an uncredited guitarist contributes slide guitar work worthy of Duane Allman's collaborations with Wilson Pickett. RECONSIDER ME The disc also includes "Release Me," Adams' superb remake of the Esther Phillips/Englebert Humperdinck hit, recorded for the tiny Watch label. Amazing stuff.
