Review

Down Beat (9/90) - 4.5 Stars - Very Good Plus - "..Guitarists might well be applauding, but "Reckless Precision" is an album that instrumentalists of all kinds and music lovers of all styles will enjoy. It's all there, rhythm, melody, harmony, improvisation, percussion."

Title Note

Fingerpicking guitar virtuoso Tuck Andress tackles an eclectic bag of covers on RECKLESS PRECISION, an album recorded with "no overdubbing, punching in or fixing of mistakes." Considering Andress's prodigious chops, that's easy to believe.

Things open with a busy and technically impressive take on Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror." WIZARD OF OZ fans will swoon over the "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/If I Only Had a Brain" medley, one fashioned with ringing harmonics. "Stella by Starlight" is seasoned with a number of crafty, lightning-paced melodic runs, while the Andress original "Manonash" is certain to leave guitarists struggling to limn a transcription. What's also remarkable about Andress is his tone, which is extracted from a 1953 Gibson L-5. The album-closing Cole Porter standard "Begin the Beguine" is perhaps the collection's most striking example of Andress's clarion timbre.
