Like Of Montreal, the M's are masters at turning their music in mind-bending directions with a skill that emphasizes both the immediate satisfactions of commercial pop and the joy of a free imagination. In this vein, REAL CLOSE ONES, the band's fifth album, is pure pop delight. Drawing on the Beatles, David Bowie, post-punk, and the psychedelic noise-pop of the Elephant Six collective, the M's offer 13 appealing tunes that manage to be elaborate and simple, far-out and straightforward, familiar and refreshing all at once. Anyone who likes their psych pop with a dose of sophistication and extra vitamins is encouraged to give the M's a try.
