Dottie West Artist Snapshot:

Fiery redhead Dottie West was one of the first 1960s female country artists to adopt an overtly glamorous, sexual image, as well as one of the few female stars to be taken seriously as a songwriter. Best known for her hit duets with Kenny Rogers, her composition "Here Comes My Baby," and her Coke commercial jingle "Country Sunshine," the sultry-voiced West was also instrumental in launching the careers of other musicians, including Steve Wariner, Larry Gatlin, and her daughter Shelly West. Sadly, Dottie West died in 1991 after complications suffered in a car accident en route to a Grand Ole Opry performance.

RCA was Dottie West's recording home during the most commercially successful years of her career and, accordingly, much of her best material was released on that label. RCA COUNTRY LEGENDS concentrates primarily on her work from the mid 1960s to the early '70s, a period when West was arguably at her best, as evidenced by her many charting hits from the time ("Here Comes My Baby," "Would You Hold It Against Me," and "Paper Mansions," among them, all of which are here).

But this set isn't merely a collection of singles (fans looking for a tidy summary of West's chart-toppers should look to THE ESSENTIAL DOTTIE WEST). Instead, this RCA package includes a nice mix of lesser-known album tracks alongside the hits, making it an even-handed representation of the period. All of the work on this top-notch comp boasts the classic Nashville sound of the period and, of course, West's alluring vocals.
