Formed in 1995 by two Brown University graduates, Jarret Myer and Bryan Brater, Rawkus Records built up a stellar track record over the next decade for high quality hip-hop that spanned Talib Kweli's socially conscious "Get By" and Mos Def's self-explanatory "Ms. Fat Booty." Collecting the best from these artists in addition to tracks by the eclectic Common and the late Big L (who was shot to death in 1999), BEST OF DECADE 1 is a panorama of cutting-edge music that at its best, like Styles P and Pharoahe Monch's "The Life" or Black Star's "Respiration," represents hip-hop's potential for promoting social change as well as pure entertainment.
