Title Note

There is a stunning variety to Ravel's musical output, and the wealth of compositional ideas is well archived on the present disc performed by the Montreal Symphony conducted by Charles Dutoit. Ravel is one of the most versatile composers of the 20th century; he is a compositional chameleon. His 'Rapsodie espagnole' is truly Spanish and his La Valse smacks of 19th century Vienna. There are aspects of neo-classicism in 'Menuet Antique,' and of impressionism in 'Une barque sur l'ocean.' In 'Tombeau de Couperin' he harks back to earlier dance forms. His 'Bol‚ro' which was used in the hit movie "10," is palpably erotic, a fifteen minute crescendo.

Many of Ravel's works exist both in orchestral and piano versions. Such an example is the 'Alborada del Gracioso,' a virtuosic tour de force which imitates the guitar. Despite the variety of colors heard (yes, heard) here, they are all distinctly Ravel's; they have a clear individuality and stamp of greatness all his own. This is a fine 2-disc compilation, fabulously performed.
