Since the mid-1970s, guitarist Pat Metheny established himself, in jazz and beyond, with a unique style--one combining direct, genial lyricism and radiant spaciousness, along with a willingness to employ electronic effects common to many rock guitarists but avoided by most jazz players. This approach has made him popular with audiences not usually attuned to contemporary jazz. Further, Metheny has refused to stand still, performing in varied styles and contexts, and collaborating with musicians as diverse as Jim Hall and David Bowie.

This volume of SELECTED RECORDINGS is another edition in ECM's career retrospectives sequenced by the artist, here encompassing 1975-1984. RARUM IX begins and ends with sublime trio performances--the former is the energizing and nimble "Bright Size Life" with the legendary electric bassist Jaco Pastorious and drummer Bob Moses, and the latter is the classic ballad "Lonely Woman" with the equally legendary acoustic bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Billy Higgins. In between can be found a charming solo idyll and two steady bands, the constant being longtime keyboardist Lyle Mays, whose vivid-yet-restrained style makes him a perfect foil for Metheny. Throughout, the guitarist dazzles with his balance of conviviality and uncompromising artistry.
