Review

Entertainment Weekly (2/23/01, p.162) - "...Chicago blues is a powerful force in the right hands, which, in this case, belong to the son of Muddy Waters..." - Rating: B
JazzTimes (6/01, p.106) - "...Proves once again that the acorn doesn't fall far from the tree..."
Mojo (Publisher) (1/02, p.71) - Included in Mojo's "Best Blues Albums of 2001".
Mojo (Publisher) (5/01, p.112) - "...A tangy cocktail, skillfully made to a classic Chicago bar recipe, straight up with a couple of olives in the form of duets with Taj Mahal..."

Title Note

Personnel includes: Big Bill Morganfield, Taj Mahal (vocals, guitar); Bob Margolin, Billy Flynn (guitar); Billy Branch, Paul Oscher (harmonica); Pinetop Perkins, Mr. B (piano); Robert Stronger, Nick Moss (bass); Kenny Smith (drums).

Recorded at Studio Chicago, Chicago, Illinois.

It's hard enough for most musicians to avoid the sophomore slump, but when the artist in question is the son of one of music's all-time legends.well, the record better be good. Luckily, Muddy Waters progeny Big Bill Morganfield shows that his initial recorded effort was far from a fluke, with RAMBLIN' MIND delivering a slab of confident, danceable urban blues that does his daddy proud. Possessing a vocal approach and timbre that is sometimes an uncanny ringer for Waters's distinctively clipped style, Big Bill mixes hard Chicago style blues ("Highway 69") with slightly jazzier Mose Allison-style fare ("Mellow Chick Swing") that reveals he is his own (blues) man.
