Review

Rolling Stone (4/17/03, p.103) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...All lilting vocals and gentle acoustic fireworks....The Jayhawks' old-fashioned gift is that they can make being lost sound sort of nice..."
Spin (5/03, p.116) - "...RAINY DAYS MUSIC returns to the Byrds nest....Gary Louris' shaky/sweet vocals suit the album's rueful vibe..." - Grade: B
Entertainment Weekly (4/11/03, p.76) - "...Folk-rock laced with banjos, accordions, and pedal steel, MUSIC is the roots move one suspects fans have wanted for years, its classic rock flavor echoing the Byrds, CSNY, and Poco..." - Rating: B+
Uncut (5/03, p.102) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...It's all acoustic guitars, rich jangling melodies and heavenly harmonies....Gary Louis has come up with some of his most memorable compositions..."
Magnet (4/03, p.94) - "...This album is buoyed by the best set of tunes since TOWN HALL; 'You Look So Young' and 'Angelyne' are as delicate and sweet as anything Louris and Co. have penned..."
CMJ (04/14/03, p.8) - "...Revisits familiar territory with aplomb and enthusiasm, while letting the music do all the talking..."
Dirty Linen (06-07/03, p.83) - "...A low-key effort that features delicate harmonies, recalling California relatives such as Poco and the post-Gram Parsons Burrito Brothers..."
Mojo (Publisher) (4/03, p.92) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Their new-found economy makes for some pretty lovely highpoints....Louris is unquestionably a virtuoso, playing his parts with a decorous restraint, and contributing cooing, affectingly human vocals..."

Product note

'Rainy Day Music' is The Jayhawks seventh album, their third since the departure of co-founder and songwriter Mark Olson and their first for alt. country imprint Lost Highway (home to Ryan Adams). It continues the move away from their country roots but pares back the West Coast pop sheen of previous album 'Smile' for a sparser more acoustic sound. Jakob Dylan and Matthew Sweet also contribute.

You never can tell what Americana/alt-country heroes the Jayhawks will do next. They started out with two voices in singer/songwriters Marc Olsen (sp?) and Gary Louris. After Olsen split, Louris spearheaded the band's most angular, least country album THE SOUND OF LIES, but RAINY DAY MUSIC turns the tables yet again by presenting the softest, most acoustic, ballad-oriented side the band has ever shown. Things start out fairly perky with the sparkling, jangly folk-rock of "Stumbling Through the Dark" and the poppy "Tailspin," but after that the melodic acoustic guitars and golden harmony vocals recall nothing so much as vintage Crosby, Stills & Nash. This is obviously no accident, as "Madman," the most overtly CSN-like tune, features a guest appearance by none other than Steve Stills's son Chris. Louris's top-notch singing and winning way with a melody carry through the album brilliantly. If someone's going to represent '70s-style folk-rock in the 21st century, RAINY DAY MUSIC leaves little doubt about the guys to whom the task should fall.
