In the north of England, a wheeling and dealing jack-of-all-trades (Bruce Jones) is suddenly put upon to come up with money for his daughter's first communion dress when his van is stolen. As he devises scheme after scheme to get the money, things go from bad to worse, but Bob is determined to get Coleen to the church on time in this humorous yet starkly realistic portrayal of working-class characters from director Ken Loach (RIFF RAFF). The film features music by Stewart Copeland of the Police.
