Title Note

Personnel: Bill Evans (piano); Harold Land (tenor saxophone); Kenny Burrell (guitar); Ray Brown (bass); Philly Joe Jones (drums).

Recorded at Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California in May 1976.

Digital remastering by Phil De Lancie (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).

Jazz piano legend Bill Evans' name is almost unthinkable without the word "Trio" coming to mind. But he did record a few--very few--albums in a group context. This session was recorded in May 1976, with longtime friend/musical associate Philly Joe Jones, and some new-to-Evans players: bass master Ray Brown, jazz guitar giant Kenny Burrell and the sublimely restrained bop tenor saxophonist Harold Land.

There are no Evans tunes here, but the program is first-rate: Thad Jones' standard "A Child is Born" (a wistful gem), Michel Legrand's "Martina" (Brown shines here) and the cool-cat (think "Pink Panther") blues of the Burrell original "Bass Face" (featuring a gloriously big-toned solo from Land, that magically transports you to an after-hours club). Evans' playing is slyly swinging and relaxed--giving you the impression (almost) that this was a spontaneous jam session. If you want to hear a rare side of Evans, orif you just want to hear some pros deliver a set of fine & mellow jazz--QUINTESSENCE is highly recommended.
