Quanta (CD)

A founder of the Tropicalia movement, he has embraced a huge variety of influences, from traditional regional styles of the Brazilian Northeast to jazz, reggae, disco, rock, and African music. Romantic, political, and downright funky, Gil always has an eye on both the past and the future.

Produced with great slickness by the ex-Mutante known as Liminha, QUANTA features Gil in top vocal form. As usual with a Gilberto Gil recording, a wide variety of musical styles is represented here. The English translations of the lyrics also point to a wide range of subjects, from the Internet to garlic pills to the nature of creativity.

Some of the songs such as "Pela Internet" and "Guerra Santa" are impressive juxtapositions that intertwine contemporary Brazilian pop with elements of blues, rap and just about anything else you can think of; yet the music on QUANTA is never so eccentric as to be overly challenging to the listener. As such it's an excellent example of Gil's recent, more palatable work.
