Review

Alternative Press (10/00, pp.98-9) - 3 out of 5 - "...Cheerily offers hip hop without the terrorism, sampladelic culture without the pretense of solemnity..."
Magnet (8-9/00, p.83) - "...Dance tunes for those who don't dance, groove-heavy mantras for people who drink beer and like distorted guitars with their drum'n'bass....jovial and as close to electronica as most indie audiences get..."
CMJ (5/22/00, p.26) - "...Stimulates serotonin and tickles sensitive spots. [Alan] Sutherland lines his melodic bubbles with sudsy hoops of gurgling big beat and mischievous humor..."

Title Note

Land Of The Loops: Alan Sutherland (programming, samples, loops); Heather Lewis, Takako Minekawa, Jovita Carpenter, DJ Trouble (vocals); Dave Wilson (keyboards); Glen Smith, Explosion Robinson (programming).

Principally recorded at The New England Synthesizer Museum, Nashua, New Hampshire.

Land of the Loops is Waltham, Massachusetts native Alan Sutherland and a variety of guest singers, including Beat Happening's Heather Lewis and Cornelius associate Takako Minekawa. As you might guess from the project's name, Cornelius' sample-happy indie techno is a good comparison-though Sutherland has a bit less in the way of wit and melodic sense.

Such songs as "Single Girl Summer Home" feature appealingly wispy girl vocals and way-cool synth sounds, but the melodies aren't as strong as they could be. When Sutherland and company stretch out into more fluid, elongated, and improvisational areas (the eight-minute workout "Party Pooper," the rattling "How to Feed a Sea Monkey," and the atmospheric closer "Marshmallow Pillows"), the album becomes much more appealing. Imagine an indie-pop version of the Chemical Brothers, and you're almost there.
